Years of disaster and conflict have left Tokyo split between great powers. In the city of drone-enforced borders, bodymod black markets, and desperate resistance movements, US peacekeeper Emma Higashi is assigned to partner with Tokyo Metropolitan Police Detective Miyako Koreda. Together, they must race to solve a series of murders that test their relationship and threaten to overturn the balance of global power. And amid the chaos, they each need to decide what they are willing to do for peace.
Ninth Step Station is written by a collaboration of authors including: Malka Older, Fran Wilde, Jacqueline Koyanagi and Curtis C. Chen. Similar to all the serials from Serialbox, this story is also released in episodes. Every episode is written by a different author.
Episode 4: The Blackout Killer
Another week another episode. Might be one of the darkest ones so far. This time around Emma and Miyako find a body dumped in water. And find another body a few dumped in water a few days later. The found bodies shod quite the signs of mutilations but no evidence of the killer. Its up to Emma and Miyako to give everything to find the killer. Because if one thing is difficult is finding a killer that was able to utilize a power blackout for its crimes. No power = no cameras = no evidence.
The Blackout Killer is the first story that feels more towards a straight detective murder scene. In the first episode we have seen the sort of struggle in which the current Tokyo is in. Murders and a van that was hijacked. Comparing that setting to episode four it is quite different. This might be due to the fact that the characters so far has grown into the story but I do hope that in the next episode the lingering threats will be brought back.
What I did very much appreciate was the fact on how Jacqueline Koyanagi played out the tech part in this episode. When Emma and Miyako find the killer it did shock me to be honest. Given the setting of the story and the brutal crimes that were committed you would expect a much phychotic person and not somebody who is suffering from a glitch that is making a mental health issue worse. Of course as it is said it should not have been the sole reason but can aggrevate it. Also looking onto our current day and age and how it is evolving with tech does bring up a lot of questions what if this happens to us? Just today I read an article saying that AlphaGo is beating some of the top people in Starcraft.
Just lastly there was this small bit of a interaction that kind of ticked me off. Miyako getting an email but Emma didn't. What does this mean!? Episode four is another winner. One of the darkest so far.
