Years of disaster and conflict have left Tokyo split between great powers. In the city of drone-enforced borders, bodymod black markets, and desperate resistance movements, US peacekeeper Emma Higashi is assigned to partner with Tokyo Metropolitan Police Detective Miyako Koreda. Together, they must race to solve a series of murders that test their relationship and threaten to overturn the balance of global power. And amid the chaos, they each need to decide what they are willing to do for peace.
Ninth Step Station is written by a collaboration of authors including: Malka Older, Fran Wilde, Jacqueline Koyanagi and Curtis C. Chen. Similar to all the serials from Serialbox, this story is also released in episodes. Every episode is written by a different author.
Episode two: The Bodiless Arm
What happend last time? We met Emma, a US military turned US peacekeeper in Tokyo and Miyako of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Force. They were put together because politics required them to but also for a bigger picture. A truck was hijacked and a guy with a missing face was found in the subway....
Episode two kicks of similarily as episode one with an event happening. This time it is not a missing face but well a missing body. The only evidence found this time at the crime scene is an arm. Yes, somebody cut of this arm with a clean cut, simultaneously slicing the arm and cauterizing. Even the tips of the fingers have been burned off to avoid any possible identification. The only Emma and Miyako have this time is the tattoo on the arm. Its a piece of art that has to be traceable to a single artist right?
What I enjoyed about this episode was how Fran Wilde build the world further. One part that comes to show in this episode of it was technology. The part where special tattoo inkt can be used to create bindings and even locks on the arm or chest or any other part intrigued. It plays a lot in what we might see within a couple of years I reckon. This tatto modification also plays in integral in this weeks episode.
Besides this technology part the relation between Emma and Miyako also continues to grow. Whether in the right direction is still hard to judge, there seems to be (for me) some friction building between the two with one not telling about something in an important case and maybe evenm some jealousy? It is curious to see where this will be going.
All in all its a solid action packed story. There are now multiple cases being followed in the story, I do hope to see some conclusion coming soon. Otherwise it will be hard to keep track of everything happening.
