Media Alert: ROBOT OVERLORDS – THE NOVEL!

Gollancz acquire novelisation of upcoming British science-fiction film with a high-profile cast

The eagerly-anticipated British independent film, ROBOT OVERLORDS, is due for release in early 2015

Gollancz, an imprint of the Orion Publishing Group, is thrilled to announce the acquisition of World Rights to publish the official novelisation. The fully authorised tie-in novel will be written by the scriptwriter and co-creator of the science-fiction movie, Mark Stay.

From Tempo Productions and Pinewood Pictures, ROBOT OVERLORDS stars Gillian Anderson (THE X-FILES), Ben Kingsley (IRON MAN 3) and Callan McAuliffe (THE GREAT GATSBY). The film is co-written by British script-writers Mark Stay and Jon Wright, and produced by Piers Tempest. With breath taking visual effects from the UK team Nvizible and stunning onset locations in the UK Isle of Man and Northern Ireland, ROBOT OVERLORDS is generating buzz across social media platforms months ahead of the film's release in early 2015.

The film follows a group of teenagers in the wake of Earth’s invasion by Robots, and their regime which confined the human survivors to their homes. No one knows why – or what they want. There is only one clear message: Robots never lie. Nor do they show mercy . . .

The novel targets a cross-over readership, particularly readers aged 9-14. Like the film, there will be edge-of-your-seat action from the very beginning, but the novelisation also includes extra scenes, bonus material for attentive readers and fans of the film, and illustrations.

Mark Stay, screenplay co-writer and author of the novelisation, said: ‘Piers, Jon and I talked about a book from the very beginning, and we’re huge fans of those classic 80’s movie tie-in novels. I couldn’t be more excited that Gollancz are the publishers. If you want the world to share in your fun, action and robot carnage, you go to the best SF publisher in the business.’

World rights were acquired by Gollancz Publishing Director, Gillian Redfearn, from Hilary Delamere of The Agency. The novel will be published as a B-format paperback with a movie tie-in cover to mark the film's release. Gollancz will utilise cross-promotional opportunities and the UK-based cast and locations to create a unique, enormously fun marketing campaign with unprecedented behind-the-scenes access.

Gollancz Publishing Director, Gillian Redfearn said: ‘I’m so delighted to work with Mark Stay as a novelist, on a project that we’ve had the fortune to watch develop from a glimmer in his eye to an incredible British film production. It’s genuinely exciting to work with such a great UK team, and to be publishing such a cracking story – one which might literally blow your socks off.’

Piers Tempest, the producer of ROBOT OVERLOARDS, said: ‘We are delighted to be partnering with Gollancz for the novelization which will really take the reader deeper into the world of the Robot Overlords.’

Author interview with John Gwynne

Author interview with John Gwynne Author Bio: I was born in Singapore while my dad was stationed there in the RAF. Up until he retired that meant a lot of traveling around, generally a move every three years or so. I live with my wife and four wonderful (and demanding) children in East Sussex. Also three dogs, two of which will chew anything that stands still. I have had many strange and wonderful jobs, including packing soap in a soap factory, waitering in a french restaurant in Canada, playing double bass in a rock n roll band, and lecturing at Brighton University. I stepped out of university work due to my daughter’s disability, so now I split my time caring for her and working from home - I work with my wife rejuvenating vintage furniture, which means fixing, lifting, carrying, painting and generally doing what my wife tells me to do... And somehow during this time I started writing. I’ve always told my children stories at bed-time, and they pestered long and hard for me to ...

Book Review: Prince of Fools

Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence, The Red Queen's War The Red Queen is old but the kings of the Broken Empire fear her as they fear no other. Her grandson Jalan Kendeth is a coward, a cheat and a womaniser; and tenth in line to the throne. While his grandmother shapes the destiny of millions, Prince Jalan pursues his debauched pleasures. Until he gets entangled with Snorri ver Snagason, a huge Norse axe man, and dragged against his will to the icy north. In a journey across half the Broken Empire, Jalan flees minions of the Dead King, agrees to duel an upstart prince named Jorg Ancrath, and meets the ice witch, Skilfar, all the time seeking a way to part company with Snorri before the Norseman’s quest leads them to face his enemies in the black fort on the edge of the Bitter Ice. Experience does not lend Jalan wisdom; but here and there he unearths a corner of the truth. He discovers that they are all pieces on a board, pieces that may be being played in the long, se...

Book Review: Foxglove Summer

Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch, Peter Grant #5 In the fifth of his bestselling series Ben Aaronovitch takes Peter Grant out of whatever comfort zone he might have found and takes him out of London - to a small village in Herefordshire where the local police are reluctant to admit that there might be a supernatural element to the disappearance of some local children. But while you can take the London copper out of London you can't take the London out of the copper. Travelling west with Beverley Brook Peter soon finds himself caught up in a deep mystery and having to tackle local cops and local gods. And what's more all the shops are closed by 4pm..   I am a big fan of Urban Fantasy detective, I know it is going to be a shocker but this is my first Peter Grant book that I read. I have been aware of this series for a long but just never got around to reading it. Ben Aaronovitch launched his writing career with the Doctor Who books, after writing several books, he...
