Years of disaster and conflict have left Tokyo split between great powers. In the city of drone-enforced borders, bodymod black markets, and desperate resistance movements, US peacekeeper Emma Higashi is assigned to partner with Tokyo Metropolitan Police Detective Miyako Koreda. Together, they must race to solve a series of murders that test their relationship and threaten to overturn the balance of global power. And amid the chaos, they each need to decide what they are willing to do for peace.
Ninth Step Station is written by a collaboration of authors including: Malka Older, Fran Wilde, Jacqueline Koyanagi and Curtis C. Chen. Similar to all the serials from Serialbox, this story is also released in episodes. Every episode is written by a different author.
Episode 5: The Deadly Defection
Finally. After finishing the fifth episode I can say that the direction has not been lost in Ninth Step Station. As always the story begins with a scene. This time Charles from the American Embassy is the target. But due to some small contraptions he is able to survive, however the tone has been definitely set. Added to this assassination attempt comes a Chinese defector. Or is he? During an altercation a gunshot is heard and the result is a dead women and a man who is calling for asylum from the Chinese government. Charles wants to keep the attempt on his life silent. So most of the focus goes onto the defector. Miyako and the other police officers are unable to truly confirm his story that being a spy or defector. The is a break though that well. Yes. You will have to read that for yourselves.
Again a weekly topic. How is the relation progressing between Emma and Miyako? With ups and downs. In the last episode we had the blackout killer and this ticked Emma off. So she is invited to stay with Miyako for the night as in Emma's neighborhood another blackout happens. During this night there are some akward conversations so to say as Miyako is quite on her guard with what to share and what not to share. At the end the remark " Ugh Americans" felt a bit misplaced but then again you have the different cultures. Good to see though that for some parts Miyako is placed in an uncomfortable situation.
Let's see where Ninth Step Station takes us next!
