Serial Pub: Bullet Catcher s01e01

Bullet Catcher s01e01 by Joaquin Lowe

Imma Moreno has no kind of life in no kind of town. Her parents are dead, her brother probably is too. When a stranger arrives, a stranger who can bend bullets to his will, she figures she has nothing to lose. So like a cobalt shadow cast in the sand, she follows him into the wastes. She's hoping to find answers, purpose, maybe even some kind of life. What she finds will change not only her life, but her whole world.

Just to start things off. Bullet Catcher is the latest addition to the Serial Pub line up of serials. This serial is a western themed one, you would probably already have guessed that by its name, with hints of True Grit meets The Dark Tower. As a big SK fan i had to catch a frist glimpse of this serial.

Meet Imma Moreno. Orphaned and bought to do the dirty dishes in a bar. At a young age, Imma witnessed how here house was burned down. These memories still visit her on a regular basis. Together with her brother Nikko she was place in an orphage, at the age of fifteen Nikko escaped the orphange using Imma's help. Unfortunately Nikko wasn't able to keep to their plan of returning and getting Imma out. Later Imma was bought by Dmitiri who took Imma to the town called Sand. Imma gets treated as dirt by Dmitiri. One day a stranger walks into the bar. As an unspoken rule patrons always have to put their guns on the table, this stranger doesn't carry one. At a given point a fight breaks out which ends in a gun fight. This stranger sits unscathed in the bar and one person calls him out for a Bullet Catcher.

This is the break that Imma has been hoping for. When Nikko and Imma were kids they would always play Bullet Catcher vs. Gunslinger, Good vs. Bad. Nikko was always the gunslinger. Might this stranger know what happend to Nikko? Just a few moments after the stranger has left the bar there is another "fight" as someone shoots a bullet at the stranger. And well, again the stranger is unscathed and the person that shot the bullet lies down in the dirt. In the chaos of this all, Imma decides to follow the stranger.

So ends the first episode. I must say that the final paragraph does sound a bit like "The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed". Nonetheless the first episode in this series has a solid start. I can see where the True Grit meets The Dark Tower comes from, it has the western feel. It has the revolver stand off's and of course some yet unexplainable type of magic or what it will be named in the upcoming episodes.

When I look at Imma. Her story is being narrated from the first person and this makes the intro very powerful as it is a personal retelling of the events and how they are still plagueing her. It also gives room to show Imma's personality and how she reacts to certain events. Be it with a bit of humor or dread. One thing that I can understand from the first episode as a whole is that Imma finds the stranger intriguing but for me personally it would have been more logical to have had some kind of introduction between the two.

This being said. The first episode of The Bullet Catcher does kick of at a good pace. I am not sure which direction the story will follow but from what i have read so far I know it will be explosive.

Tune in next week for episode 2.

Author interview with John Gwynne

Author interview with John Gwynne Author Bio: I was born in Singapore while my dad was stationed there in the RAF. Up until he retired that meant a lot of traveling around, generally a move every three years or so. I live with my wife and four wonderful (and demanding) children in East Sussex. Also three dogs, two of which will chew anything that stands still. I have had many strange and wonderful jobs, including packing soap in a soap factory, waitering in a french restaurant in Canada, playing double bass in a rock n roll band, and lecturing at Brighton University. I stepped out of university work due to my daughter’s disability, so now I split my time caring for her and working from home - I work with my wife rejuvenating vintage furniture, which means fixing, lifting, carrying, painting and generally doing what my wife tells me to do... And somehow during this time I started writing. I’ve always told my children stories at bed-time, and they pestered long and hard for me to ...

Book Review: Foxglove Summer

Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch, Peter Grant #5 In the fifth of his bestselling series Ben Aaronovitch takes Peter Grant out of whatever comfort zone he might have found and takes him out of London - to a small village in Herefordshire where the local police are reluctant to admit that there might be a supernatural element to the disappearance of some local children. But while you can take the London copper out of London you can't take the London out of the copper. Travelling west with Beverley Brook Peter soon finds himself caught up in a deep mystery and having to tackle local cops and local gods. And what's more all the shops are closed by 4pm..   I am a big fan of Urban Fantasy detective, I know it is going to be a shocker but this is my first Peter Grant book that I read. I have been aware of this series for a long but just never got around to reading it. Ben Aaronovitch launched his writing career with the Doctor Who books, after writing several books, he...
